Ari returns to acting, plays the bad guy

After taking a break for several years, German-born actor Ari Wibowo will star again in a new sinetron called Mawar Melati, this time as the bad guy.

The father of one told his fans in 2008 he was quitting his job as a sinetron actor to focus on parenting. However, the challenge of playing the antagonist lured him back into soap operas.

He said he would play Adwin, the cheeky character in the series.

The 1990s heartthrob added he was apprehensive of the new role, fearing that his fans would not be able to separate fiction from reality.

“At first, I was surprised and a bit fearful that by playing such an antagonist role, women spotting me out and about in malls would pinch me,” he said as quoted by kapanlagi.com.

“My role here is very wicked and naughty. But that doesn’t happen in real life, hopefully people who watch the sinetron will realize that,” he said.

Asked about why all sinetron seem the same these days, he said: “Well, ideally, you have to make your own sinetron [for them to be different]. But when we’re idealists, the public’s reception [of the new sinetron] tends to be lukewarm, and the money wasted.”

“We cannot deny we’re victims of trends. What’s certain is there has to be some give and take, and idealism and trends should be balanced,” he said.
