It can be tiring, but every day is beautiful
Although Joy Destiny Tiurma Tobing left Indonesian Idol after winning the competition in 2004, her timetable has been continually packed with singing performances. She finds a balance in her life on Sunday, or any other days off she can get.

In my opinion, every day is beautiful. Working in the entertainment industry is tiring. Sometimes we work while others sleep, and we sleep when others are at work.

Also, we usually work on Sundays or national holidays while others are taking a break. Recently I’ve been receiving jobs to sing at wedding receptions. Since weddings usually take place on weekends, my Sundays have been quite busy. Sometimes my days off are in the middle of the week.

It really is up to us how we make our day beautiful. We simply have to enjoy the things we do, and do the things with our heart.

If I had free time on Sunday, I would sing at the church. I’ve been singing at church since I was five years old. At that age, I had a religious album and sang at the church every week. I still sing at the church now. I see this as a form of servitude. My belief is restored that way, and it is like mind detoxification for me.

Singing at the church also reminds me that every problem can be solved, and gives me a feeling of gratitude. I frequent the Huria Kristen Batak Protestan (HKBP) church in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. But sometimes I go to other churches, such as the Bethel church.

My schedule at church varies now. Sometimes I go there for the morning service. Sometimes I go for the afternoon. It depends on my work schedule that day. For a Sunday outfit, I usually wear a skirt or trousers.

After going to church, my family usually makes a stop at Lapo Ni Tondong Ta, a restaurant which serves Batak food in Senayan, South Jakarta. We often have a family meal there. I usually order roast pork and hot orange juice or hot tea. Since I’m a singer, I avoid cold beverages.

If I have days off either on Sundays or in the middle of the week I go to the mall with my sisters. We do simple things like window shopping, or sometimes shopping too, and girl-talk. But for me, these moments are precious because my singing means it is difficult for me to get out with them often.
