Indonesia Plans Chile Quake Aid
Indonesia is consulting with Chile on how to best help it recover from this weekend’s massive 8.8 earthquake there.

“I am meeting the ad interim business representative from the Chilean embassy to ask about the situation and conditions, as well as the aid that they need,” Marty Natalegawa, foreign affairs minister, said on Monday at the presidential office.

“Indonesia’s government is ready at all times in accordance with our ability to provide help” to friendly nations in times of disaster, the minister added.

The death toll in Chile has climbed above 700 and efforts to determine the full scope of destruction have been hampered by aftershocks. Officials said 500,000 houses were destroyed or badly damaged, and President Michel Bachelet said “a growing number” of people were listed as missing.

Desperate residents have begun looting stores for food and water.

Bachelet said the country would accept some of the offers of aid that have poured in from around the world. She said Chile needs field hospitals and temporary bridges, water purification plants and damage assessment experts, as well as trained rescuers.

Marty said the Indonesian government hopes to find out from Chile which kinds of aid could make a difference most quickly.

“The area is difficult to reach, and if I’m not mistaken, the airport has been closed for 72 hours,” he said. “We’re looking for the right aid.”

Marty added that 101 Indonesians living in Chile are safe and do not face any difficulties.

“The embassy office has not been damaged much; there are problems with the electricity and communication is difficult. However, the embassy is still working and protecting our people,” he said.

Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his condolences through an aide.

“Indonesia is a country that often experiences disasters, including earthquakes,” said the President’s advisor on international relations, Dino Patti Djalal, “We feel the suffering of the government and people of Chile. We believe the Chilean government, with international cooperation, can handle this well.”
