Lennor Boutique Revamps Batik
Fashion designer Lenny Agustin’s new collection, “Dazzling Moments,” has breathed new life into traditional Indonesian textiles.

Lenny unveiled her new second-line collection at Lennor boutique in Plaza Indonesia recently. The eclectic designs transform batik and lurik (traditional striped woven cloth) into something fashion-conscious Indonesians can wear with pride on days other than Friday.

“Lennor is summer,” Lenny said. “It’s fresh, vibrant, funky and sexy.”

At the collection’s opening, models with powder-white faces, bright neon lips and colorful braids took to the catwalk in confident strides. On their bodies, ancient patterns infused with dazzling colors collided with light and airy batik sundresses.

In her new collection, Lenny turns normally drab denim into unique ethnic creations by accentuating the pants, shorts and jackets with colorful traditional textiles. A cute sleeveless top of faded pink batik with lace edgings and a Mandarin collar looked especially adorable over denim shorts adorned with vibrant batik bows. A pair of denim shorts was pretty when paired with a soft purple hued strapless lurik top and a mini batik bolero.

Throughout the new collection, Lenny cleverly plays with colors, volumes and silhouettes, and her playful character is set off by soft asymmetrical lines. Slim-fit cuts that flatter the contours of the body are matched with dramatic colors to create a sassy, youthful impression.

A favorite of the collection, a dainty black blouse adorned with geometrical patterns of Kawung in gold, is both elegant and feminine. The blouse was paired with a mini ruffled skirt with vibrant, bold patterns for a playful look.

Tilted Panama hats and large tote bags with daring colors and patterns added a tropical feel to the collection.

“My target market is people between 18 and 35,” Lenny said. “But actually everyone can wear my collection, as long as they’re young at heart.”

The men’s collection featured 12 vibrant batik and lurik shirts over blue jeans. Bright neon-colored patterns were crisscrossed and mismatched for a dynamic style. Upturned collars were accentuated with batik or knitted shawls of contrasting colors.

Funky accessories, such as oversized pendants, wrap bracelets and floral brooches gave a cheerful element to the outfits.

“Our collections are very exclusive,” Lenny said. “There’s only one piece for each color, each design and each size. When it’s sold, we’ll never produce another one with the same design.”

The new boutique highlights Lennor’s lighter side. The 80-square-meter shop is divided into two sections, with the outdoor section set off by neon-light pillars that look down on a cobblestone walkway as mannequins stand guard in funky-styled outfits. The extensive indoor section offers a jet black marble floor showcasing neatly arranged clothes and accessories on racks and in pleasantly-lit display cases.

Lenny’s second-line collection is a collaboration with renowned fashion designer Ananda Soewono, the owner of Batik Semar, and Adrian Riyadi, the managing director of PT Unimitra Kharisma.

“Our collaboration started in early 2008,” Ananda said. “At the time, I observed that there was an age gap between those who wore batik. Only adults wore batik. Young people usually shunned it because of its conventional designs and dark colors.”

All fabrics for Lennor collections are provided by Batik Semar, with Lenny as the chief fashion designer and Adrian as the business development director of the boutique.

“We will continue to feature traditional Indonesian textiles,” Lenny said. “But we’ll turn them into chic fashion items for the young generation.”

Lennor also offers more formal attire under the label Lennor Executive.

It plans to open more shops in big cities around the country including Surabaya and Denpasar, and is also looking overseas to Singapore and Hong Kong.

“Lennor will become a benchmark for Indonesian fashion in the future,” Adrian said. “It’ll take a lot of hard work and determination, but we’re sure we can do it.”

Taruna Kusmayadi, chairman of the Association of Indonesian Fashion Designers (APPMI), praised Lennor.

“This joint-venture may set an example for other APPMI members to be more serious in developing their fashion business,” Taruna said. “In this [venture], we can see that besides getting the infrastructure and investment ready, these people are willing to work hard to achieve their goal. I wish them all the best.”
