Government issues standards for green buildings
The government has issued its first-ever decree on standards for green buildings, which promotes low-carbon architecture amid efforts to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

The decree, which goes into force this year, will not be binding on the country’s building owners.

“We will first target hotels, office buildings and apartments in big cities, since they also contribute much to emissions,” Dadang Hilman, head of the climate change adaptation unit at the State Environment Ministry, told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

The decree sets nine standards for green buildings, from eco-friendly materials and low-carbon fuel, to water and waste management and indoor quality. It calls for the use of green-certified materials made by local producers.

In terms of energy, the buildings should set up facilities to conserve energy and promote alternative fuel with low-carbon emissions.

Owners of green buildings should also build facilities to conserve water and harvest rainwater as an alternative to depleted groundwater.
