Jakarta Derby Victor Persija Has Little Time to Relax
Persija Jakarta may have ended its five-match winless run, but that relief may not last long.
Its next four matches are all at home, and each of them come in a hectic 11-day span.
Persija hosts Persisam Samarinda on Sunday, followed by Bontang FC on Jan. 27. Persijap Jepara visits Gelora Bung Karno Stadium three days later, and the Kemayoran Tigers close the first half of the Indonesian Super League season by hosting Persela Lamongan on Feb. 3.
Good results could see Persija, currently 14th in the league and one point above the relegation zone, safely in mid-table. If it drops points, though, safety could slip further away.
“[The fixtures] might put us into trouble,” Persija technical director Benny Dollo said.
“Players will only have a little time to rest between games, while, because of playing at home, they will bear great pressure to win all of those [matches].”
A Talaohu Abdul Musyafry hat-trick lifted some of the gloom as the capital club beat city rival Persitara North Jakarta 3-0 on Wednesday.
Persija head coach Maman Suryaman said the return of Agus Indra from the hajj also provided a lift. Still, the club plans to use the transfer window to beef up its roster, particularly in midfield.
Paraguayan playmaker Richard Caceres has failed to live up to expectations so far, and assistant manager Ferry Indrasjarief said he will soon be released. China-born Singapore international Shi Jiayi is reportedly among the team’s targets.
In league play on Thursday, Persebaya Surabaya and Persema Malang completed a match which lasted two days.
The first half ended 0-0 on Wednesday, but the second half was postponed until early Thursday because the Gelora 10 November pitch in Surabaya was water-logged with rain.
A goalless draw looked likely until referee Iis Isya Permana awarded Persebaya a contentious penalty kick. Persema defender Jaya Teguh Angga brought down Takatoshi Uchida inside the box five minutes from full time, although there appeared to be no contact between the players.
Despite Persema’s protests, Anderson da Silva converted the spot kick. The visitors ran to the referee after the final whistle to continue their complaints but were intercepted by police.
“It’s clear that Persebaya had to win the match. That was clearly not a penalty,” Persema coach Subangkit told state-run news agency Antara. “It should’ve been a draw.”
Noh Alam Shah scored the only goal in Arema Malang’s 1-0 win at Persik Kediri on Wednesday. Elsewhere, Persiwa Wamena routed Persela Lamongan 5-0.
