Persija, Sriwijaya Ready for Title Rival Showdown
It may be just another match to Benny Dollo, but Persija Jakarta vs. Sriwijaya FC is an eagerly awaited fixture for Indonesian Super League fans.
High-flying Persija hosts the two-time defending Copa Indonesia champion at 3:30 p.m. today at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. The clash has added regional flavor as both rosters are peppered with Indonesia and Singapore internationals.
Benny, though, sought to play down the match’s importance.
“I know both Persija and Sriwijaya have internationals on their rosters, but there’s nothing special in this match,” Benny said on Thursday. “As we know each other very well, we have nothing to hide. Sriwijaya is a good team as they have a good roster and solid teamwork.”
Persija ended its swing through Borneo with two points from two matches, drawing 2-2 at Bontang FC and 0-0 at Persisam Samarinda. The capital club dropped to seventh place with 29 points from 19 matches, losing some of the momentum it gained after a run of home victories.
Sriwijaya comes into the match with three successive victories, climbing to fourth place. It began the second half of the season by winning 2-0 at Persebaya Surabaya and 1-0 at Persik Kediri before returning home to beat Persisam 3-0 on Tuesday.
The compressed schedule has taken a toll, though, as Arief Suyono, Isnan Ali and Ponaryo Astaman all suffered mild injuries in their last match.
“The boys are in good condition. Some of them still look tired, but I hope they can overcome it,” Sriwijaya coach Rahmad Darmawan said. “That’s why I only scheduled light training as we need to maintain their fitness. I will put on a rotation as I put five starters on the bench in the previous match.
“Persija has a complete roster, especially in the attack. They have a good combination as Bambang Pamungkas provides maturity while Aliyudin and Talaohu Abdul Musyafri have good speed.”
Elswhere today, Persitara North Jakarta travels to Persipura Jayapura, while Persiwa Wamena hosts Pelita Jaya.
League leader Arema Malang added some heft to its advantage on Thursday, beating Persik Kediri 3-0 at Kanjuruhan Stadium.
Singapore striker Noh Alam Shah set the crowd roaring when he scored in the 23rd minute off countryman Muhamad Ridhuan’s cross. The strike was Alam Shah’s ninth of the season. Roman Chmelo added Arema’s second in the 83rd, and Pierre Njanka rounded out the scoring from the penalty spot in added time.
Arema, which lost 1-0 at Persiba Balikpapan on Feb. 14, stretched its lead to seven points over Persipura, which has 35. Persiba and Sriwijaya are level on 34 points, while Arema’s city rival Persema Malang is fifth with 31.
Persik stayed in 15th, tied with Bontang on 22 points.
