Reaching Thomas Cup Semifinals Easy as 1-2-3 for Indonesia
Indonesia waltzed into the semifinals of the Thomas Cup on Thursday, sweeping past host Thailand 3-0.

Its shuttlers needed just 78 minutes between them to see off the Group C runner-up in qualifying at Nakhon Ratchasima. Singles victories by Taufik Hidayat and Sony Dwi Kuncoro sandwiched a doubles win by Markis Kido and Alvent Yulianto Chandra, setting up a semifinal with Japan.

Taufik saw off Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk 21-15, 21-19 at No. 1 singles, and Sony beat Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-10, 21-12. With usual partner Hendra Setiawan still sidelined with dengue fever, Markis teamed up with Alvent to see off Patipat Chalardchaleam and Thitipong Lapoe 21-12, 21-16.

The result was Indonesia’s second successive sweep, having defeated Vietnam 5-0 in Group A play on Wednesday. It faces Japan today at 5:30 p.m., with the winner guaranteeing itself a place in the tournament proper in Kuala Lumpur.

Japan, the Group D runner-up, defeated Taiwan 3-1. Kenichi Tago beat Hsieh Yu Hsin 21-14, 21-12 at No. 1 singles, and No. 1 doubles pair Hirokatsu Hashimoto and Noriyasu Hirata won 21-11, 19-21, 22-20 over Chen Hung Ling and Lin Yu Lang to put the Japanese one win from victory.

No. 2 singles shuttler Hsueh Hsuan Yi kept Taiwan alive with a 21-17, 21-16 win against Kazushi Yamada, only for Kenta Kazuno and Kenichi Hayakawa to close out the tie with a 21-17, 21-15 defeat of Fang Chieh Min and Lee Sheng Mu.

In the bottom half of the draw, Group C winner India swept Vietnam 3-0 to set up a semifinal against Korea. Kashyap Parupalii, Arvind Bhatt and Anup Sridhar all posted singles victories for India.

Korea, the Group D winner, defeated Hong Kong 3-1. Park Sung Hwan beat Hu Yun 21-13, 21-4 at No. 1 singles, and Jung Jae Sung and Hwang Ji Man defeated Yohan Hadikusumo Wiratama and Wong Wai Hong 18-21, 21-19, 21-17 at No. 1 doubles. Chan Yan Kit won 21-17, 21-18 over Kim Sa Rang at No. 2 singles before Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hyun beat Leung Chun Yiu and Lo Lok Kei 21-14, 21-12 at No. 2 doubles.

The top three finishers advance to the Thomas Cup finals, with the fourth-best team qualifying if its world ranking is better than the fourth-place team from Europe.

In the Uber Cup, Indonesia made sure of a semifinal spot after it swept Thailand 5-0 in Group X play. It meets top-seeded Korea today at 1:30 p.m. to determine first place in the group.

Adriyanti Firdasari opened proceedings at No. 1 singles with a 21-10, 29-27 defeat of Inthanon Ratchanok. Greysia Polii and Niyta Krishinda Maheswari followed with a 21-16, 21-17 win at No. 1 doubles against Savitree Amitapai and Vacharaporn Munkit, and Maria Kirstin Yulianti beat Nichaon Jindapon 21-13, 16-21, 21-10 to secure victory. No. 2 doubles pair Shendy Puspa Irawati and Liliyana Natsir and No. 3 singles shuttler Aprilia Yuswandari also won to complete the sweep.

The Indonesia-Korea winner secures first place in Group X and will play the winner of today’s tie between India and Taiwan in Saturday’s semifinals. Japan won its first three matches to claim top spot in Group Y and will face the Group X runner-up regardless of its result against Hong Kong.
