Jakarta Rivals Must Wait for Fans to Behave as Capital Clash Called Off
JFootball fans in the nation’s capital apparently must learn to behave before being allowed to watch the Jakarta Derby.

City rivals Persija Jakarta and Persitara North Jakarta were scheduled to meet on Sunday at Soemantri Brodjonegoro Stadium. Jakarta Police, concerned about possible fan violence, later wanted the match moved to Gelora Bung Karno Stadium and played with no spectators.

Rather than play at an empty stadium, Indonesian Super League administrator PT Liga Indonesia rescheduled the derby.

“Persitara didn’t meet 14-day notification, but in this case we saw there was still a chance to reschedule the match,” PTLI chief executive Joko Driyono said on Saturday. “Jakarta Police only issued a match permit for an empty stadium, but we’ll try to hold the match with spectators.”

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Amar Rafli previously said the derby would be played in an empty stadium because of the history of violence between Persija and Persitara supporters.

Persitara organizing chief Fachri Sinaga said the club agreed to the postponement to ease its financial burden.

“If we still organized the match in an empty stadium, it would double our loss and put more burden on club’s financial condition,” he said. “It’s time to end this [rescheduling]. If it continues, sponsors will go and clubs will suffer. In the end, it will kill the competition.”

Persija was grateful for the delay as it gave players who saw action during last week’s Asian Cup qualifiers a chance to recover.

“We welcomed the postponement as we requested it earlier, but the PTLI rejected it,” coach Benny Dollo said.

Saturday’s matches saw 18th-place Pelita Jaya stay rooted to the foot of the table following a 0-0 home draw with PSPS Pekanbaru, while PSM Makassar won 1-0 at Persijap Jepara.
