Indonesia Finishes Clean Sweep of Malaysia at Davis Cup

Indonesia continued its Davis Cup dominance over regional rival Malaysia, completing a 5-0 sweep in Asia/Oceania Zone Group II play on Sunday.

Kuala Lumpur’s National Tennis Center was a home away from home as Indonesia strolled into the semifinals. It had already secured victory when Christopher Rungkat and Ketut Nesa Arta won Saturday’s doubles match 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6) over Adam Jaya and Si Yew-Ming.

With Sunday’s reverse singles matches already academic, Indonesia replaced Christopher with David Agung Susanto. The 19-year-old did not disappoint on his Davis Cup debut, beating Mohd Assri Merzuki 6-3, 6-3.

“We had won the tie anyway, so it was good experience for David,” non-playing captain Surya Wijaya Budi said on Sunday.

Sunu Wahyu Trijati wrapped up the sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Ariez Elyaas Deen Heshaam. Christopher and Sunu recorded singles victories on Friday.

Indonesia faces another Southeast Asian foe in the semifinals when it takes on Thailand on July 9-11 at a venue yet to be determined. The Thais swept Pacific Oceania 5-0 at the National Tennis Development Center in Nonthaburi, winning all five matches in straight sets.

Reaching the semifinals is not new for Indonesia, which made the last four for the fourth consecutive year. It lost 4-1 to Kuwait in 2007, 3-2 to China in 2008 and 5-0 to New Zealand in 2009.

Indonesia has a 2-2 Davis Cup record against Thailand, but it lost 4-1 in their last meeting, an Asia/Oceania Group I relegation playoff in 2005. Surya said the Thais will be tough, “but we still have more than three months to prepare for the semifinals.”

The other semifinal features New Zealand against Pakistan. The Kiwis nearly blew a 2-0 lead at Sri Lanka before Jose Statham won Sunday’s final singles match 6-1, 6-0, 7-5 over Rajeev Rajapakse to give the visitors a 3-2 victory.

Aisam Qureshi won his third match in three days to lead Pakistan to a 3-1 lead at Hong Kong. He beat Hui Cheuk-Wai 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 in singles play on Friday, teamed with Aqeel Khan in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 doubles win over Hui and Yu Hiu-Tung, and sealed the victory by sweeping Yu 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in Sunday’s reverse singles.

In Division I, Australia will host Japan in the semifinals after sweeping Taiwan 5-0 in Melbourne. Bernard Tomic, at 17 Australia’s youngest Davis Cup player in 77 years, completed an unbeaten debut by winning his second singles match of the weekend 6-7 (7), 6-0, 6-3 over Lee Hsin-han.

“It’s amazing to have a start like this,” he said. “When I ever get the chance to play for Australia and the guys call me up, I’ll be ready more than ever.”

Japan swept the Philippines 5-0. The other semifinal features China, a 3-2 winner at Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
