Australia Eyes Indonesian Football Talent
Fans won’t be the only ones following every move when the Indonesian national team takes to the pitch against Australia on Wednesday in Brisbane. Several coaches from Australia's A-League wiill be on hand, scoping out possible talent for their teams.

North Queensland, Newcastle, Gold Coast and Brisbane will all have representatives in the stands, while Central Coast’s coach will be watching from the Socceroos bench as an assistant.

“I’m a big believer in the talent we’ve got on our doorstep,” Melbourne coach Ernie Merrick told the Sydney Morning Herald Web site www.smh.com.au, , saying he would be watching video of the game to assess Indonesia’s players.

Forwards Bambang Pamungkas and Budi Sudarsono and defender Ismed Sofyan are said to be among those leading the race to become the first Indonesian to play in Australia’s top league.

The interest will intensify if Football Federation Australia follows through on talk of adopting a “5+1 rule”, which would allow teams to add one Asian player along with five other internationals.

“There are plenty of Indonesian players good enough for the A-League,” said Robbie Gaspar, an Australian midfielder playing for Persema Malang, adding that the experience would help Indonesia’s players sharpen their skills.

“The player benefits, the national team benefits, and so does the [A-League] club. They’d sell a lot of replica shirts in the markets in Jakarta.’’
